Can I rent a motorcycle without a license?

Technically yes, but it’s risky and not recommended

In Vietnam, you're required to hold either:

  • A valid Vietnamese motorbike license, or an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1968 Vienna Convention, with motorbike (A1 or A2) endorsement.

Most IDPs based on the 1949 Geneva Convention (common from countries like the U.S., Australia, Japan) are not valid in Vietnam—even if they include motorbike endorsements.

However, we also understand that if we refuse to rent you a motorbike due to the lack of a valid license, you can still easily rent one elsewhere in Vietnam. Therefore, we encourage you to consider carefully and make the decision that’s most appropriate for you

What happens if you get caught riding a motorcycle without a license?

- Police fines: You can expect to be fined around US $20 – US $50 if you’re stopped at random police checkpoints, but up to US $200 if you’re stopped at checkpoint in. Ha Giang area.

- Insurance issues: Most insurance policies (including travel insurance) are void if you don’t hold a valid license recognized in Vietnam.

- Legal responsibility: In case of an accident, even if it’s not your fault, you might be held fully liable if you don’t have a legal license.

Is it necessary to buy insurance when motorbiking in Vietnam?

It is highly recommended to have insurance when traveling to Vietnam. It will help you cover a lot of things such as medical treatment, damages to property, personal belongings, and legal expenses.

How is the weather in Northern Vietnam?

Vietnam’s climate tends to vary from the north to south and also varies according to altitude and time of year.

March – April – May

Spring is a pleasant time to travel by motorcycle in northern Vietnam. During this season, you will experience a succession of beautiful sunny days, with clear blue skies and the occasional drizzle of rain. During May, the weather is in transition from spring to summer therefore is not too hot, and it hardly rains.

(Average temperature can be slightly cooler on the high lands)
March - Max Temp 23°C Min 17°C
April - Max Temp 28°C Min 20°C
May - Max Temp 32°C Min 23°C

June – July - August

Summer is a great season to ride Vietnam, but it may get quite hot on some days, so light summer gear is advised. During July and August, the temperature begins to drop slightly, and rain becomes more pronounced. The roads will be mainly dry during June, but can become wet at times during July and August when the rains are heaviest, but still remaining safe to drive on.

(Average temperature can be slightly cooler on the high lands)
June - Max Temp 36°C Min 23°C
July - Max Temp 34°C Min 20°C
Aug - Max Temp 33°C Min 20°C

September – October - November

Autumn is probably the best season to ride in Vietnam. The weather has cooled considerably after the rainy season, so it’s not hot and humid. September will see the rainy season coming to an end, and from October on temperatures will remain mild and mostly dry and sunny.

(Average temperature can be slightly cooler on the higher land)
Sept - Max Temp 28°C Min 20°C
Oct - Max Temp 30°C Min 21°C
Nov - Max Temp 30°C Min 21°C

December – January – February

During the winter the weather can be cool to mild. You will experience mostly beautiful sunny days with clear blue skies, and the occasional drizzle of rain. Depending on the Chinese calendar during the month of February there are many festivals on, in celebration of the Vietnamese lunar New Year. The roads will be mainly dry during winter. The temperature can drop quite dramatically in higher ground such as Sa Pa and Ha Giang, so coming prepared with winter gear is highly advised.

(Average temperature can be slightly cooler on the higher land)
Dec - Max Temp 25°C Min15°C
Jan - Max Temp 23°C Min 13°C
Feb - Max Temp 25°C Min 18°C

How is the Central weather in Vietnam?
The central coastal area is usually quite dry and temperatures range from mild to hot from March to October, and wet and cool from November to February.
Da Lat, located in the Central Highlands, generally experiences cooler temperatures than the coastal lands. From November to March, daily highs tend to range from the low to mid 20s, while evening temperatures can drop significantly lower and warmer clothing is required.
How is the Southern weather in Vietnam?
Southern Vietnam experiences only two seasons: wet and dry, both with warm temperatures. The wet season lasts from May through to November while the dry extends from December through April. February, March and April are typically hot and humid.
Is it difficult to ride in Vietnam?

For foreign travelers — especially those from countries with more structured traffic systems — driving in Vietnam can be a real challenge. In major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the chaotic flow can feel overwhelming at first. You will see that traffic laws are extremely laxed and traffic can go anywhere. Give it a few days to adapt, take it slow, don’t attempt to change the way they drive or become upset, and go with the flow. Always maintain a “defensive riding” mindset of anticipation. You will find that, while it may look like chaos, the Vietnamese are not a violent people so accidents and “road rage” are actually quite uncommon, considering the sheer amount of riders on the road. They flow around each other, like ants. Keep that in mind and what once seemed impossible will start to feel manageable. Be water, my friend.

Is it OK to wear shorts in Vietnam?
Yes, it is generally acceptable to wear shorts in Vietnam.
While the country once had more conservative clothing norms, modern Vietnam — especially in tourist areas — is quite relaxed.
However, when visiting religious sites like temples or pagodas, you should avoid wearing shorts above the knee. Some locations may provide a cloth or sarong to cover your legs if needed.
What side of the road does Vietnam drive on?
Vietnam uses the right-hand side of the road.
How old do you have to be to ride a motorbike in Vietnam?
